●アメリカ等では主に Flatwoods Monster と呼ばれている。

●何故、「３メートルの宇宙人」と呼ばれるようになったのか？　それはおそらく…
　南山　宏氏が、昭和４３年（１９６８年）に出した著書（秋田書店『世界の円盤ミ
　ステリー』）の中で、「３メートルの怪物宇宙人」と呼んだことから、国内ではこ
　の呼び方が定着し、それが変化して現在、「３メートルの宇宙人」と呼ばれるよう
　になったのだと思われる。

　では、どうして南山氏はこの宇宙人を「３メートル」という言葉を用いて表現した
　のであろうか？　南山氏は前出書の中で「３メートルの怪物宇宙人」を紹介する前
　に次のことを述べている。

　『これらの目撃事例が、それぞれ時間と空間をはるかにへだてておこったにもかか
　われず、共通する点がいくつかあることはすでに読者もお気づきだろう。

　　一つは、目撃された宇宙人らしい生物が、地球人によく似ていることだ。細部は
　ちがうにしても、体形や容貌はほとんどヒューマノイド（人間型）といってよい。

　　もう、一つの共通点は、かれらがたいていミニ・サイズであることだ。ふつうは
　一・二〇メートル前後。高くてもせいぜい一・五〇メートルていどだ。

　　じっさい、これまでにおこった円盤宇宙人目撃事件のほとんどすべてにおいて、
　こびと宇宙人が目撃された、と報告されている。これが事実だとすると、偶然の一
　致ではかたづけられない。もし空飛ぶ円盤がほんとうに地球を訪れた宇宙人の乗り
　物であるならば、各事件の宇宙人がすべて同一種族ではないにしろ、かれらは一般
　的に比較的背の低い、地球人型の種族のようだ。

　　しかし、ごくまれではあるが、地球人とは似ても似つかぬ異様な怪物が、円盤と
　ともに目撃された事件もある。

　　ただし、これらの事件が、地球を訪れる宇宙人にさまざまの種族があることを意
　味するのか、あるいは、ただ単に目撃者の側の心理的錯覚によるものなのかは、現
　在の段階では、はっきりしていない』

　この宇宙人の身長（約３メートル）が、これまでに目撃された宇宙人の平均身長を
　大きく上回っていることから、南山氏はこの宇宙人を「３メートル」という言葉を
　用いて表現したのだと思われる。

The Sighting and Scare
The scare in Flatwoods, West Virginia on September 12, 1952 could be
compared to that of a horror movie of the same time. The small town,
with a population of three hundred, was filled with speculation after
three boys saw a red sphere slowly glide around a hill before it dropped
from sight and caused the entire side of the hill to become illuminated.
As the three boys went to search the area, Kathleen May Horner, her two
sons Tommy Hyer and Eugene Lemon and Lemon's dog accompanied them.
Lemon's dog quickly ran ahead of the group and disappeared around the
hill for several seconds before it came running back with its tail
between its legs. A fog, accompanied by a wicked stench, rolled along
the ground and meet the investigators as they neared the hill. The group
then saw a ball of flames as large as a house lying on the ground.

Looking to their left, the group saw a pair of "lights" shining beneath
a large oak tree. After shining his light in the direction of the
objects, the group was astonished to see a bizarre creature staring
back. Standing over six feet tall, the creatures head was in the shape
of an ace of spades and included a circular "window" which was dark
except for the apparent eyes that shone blue. No arms or legs were seen.
The beast glided towards the group before turning towards the ball of
flame. Lemon quickly fainted as the rest of the group dragged him to
safety. Half an hour later, when interviewed by A. Lee Stewart Jr. of
the Braxton Democrat, most of the group members were unable to speak.
Stewart guaranteed that each had seen something strange that had badly
frightened them.

Later that night, Stewart went back to the seen with Lemon to
investigate. Although he noticed a strange smell, he could not find any
other information to prove the sighting. At about 7 AM the next morning,
Stewart found skid marks leading up to the "landing" area.

Other Sightings and Information
Bailey Frame, of nearby Birch River, claimed to see a bright orange
sphere circling over the area where the monster had been seen. Frame
claimed he saw the object for about fifteen minutes before it flew away.

About eleven miles way, a woman and her mother were on route to their
church when they claimed to see the creature. Years later, writer John
A. Keel spoke with a couple who claimed to see the same creature the
night after the initial report. About fifteen miles from the first
sighting, the duo saw a ten foot tall creature with a horrible stench
approach their vehicle which had stalled moments earlier. Several
minutes later, a sphere glided from the woods into the sky.

Some investigators suggest the witnesses saw an owl and a meteor and
created the rest using their imagination. Years later, Kathleen May
Horner claimed to receive a letter from several government officials
that revealed a photograph of the creature. Horner claimed the letter
detailed the creature and how it was in reality a spaceship that had
malfunctioned due to an oil difficulty. This idea is harder to believe
then the initial account.

The Phantom of Flatwoods

Ed Given:] The tales of the Braxton County
Monster have fascinated young and old alike for
more than forty years. The interest was
rekindled recently when a camp known locally as
the Green Monster Shack was destroyed by fire.
The following is an account formulated by Judy
Davis and utilized by her during her tenure as
a teacher at Flatwoods Elementary School. The
folk lore lesson included drawings and other
activities that not only told the story of the
now world famous UFO sighting, but taught
geography and other circular activities as
well. The story is reproduced here for your
enjoyment.

The Story

Just before dark four boys were playing football
on the playground at Flatwoods School. These were
local boys and they often played at the school in
the evenings. Today would be special, because what
was seen this evening would cause people to talk
for many years to come. The date was September 12,
1952.

What the boys saw was described as a "shooting
star" that fell to earth on the top of the hill
adjacent to the playground. The place where it
landed was known as the Bailey Fisher property. As
children are prone to do, they decided to check it
out. On the way up the hill they stopped at the
Kathleen May home and Mrs. May, plus her two sons,
accompanied the group up the hill.

When they got to the top, Mrs. May noticed that
"...the night was foggy and there was a mist in
the evening air". She also said that "...the air
had a metallic smell which burned their eyes and
noses".

About the length of a football field away, they
all saw an object that was glowing and hissing.
Walking closer to check out the "star", they noted
that it was about 10 feet around.

A few feet away from this glowing object they saw
two lights, much like the glow of flashlights,
about 12 inches apart. One of the boys had a
flashlight and when he turned it on the object a
huge creature with "...a bright red face, bright
green clothing, a head which resembled the ace of
spades, and clothing which, from the waist down,
hung in great folds" was seen.

As the creature seemed to be floating on air
towards them, the group all ran from the hill back
to the May home to call the sheriff.

The sheriff, Robert Carr, and deputy Burnell Long,
were investigating a report of a burning object
thought to be a downed airplane, below Gassaway on
the Elk River. By the time they got to the
Flatwoods scene, much evidence was destroyed by
people who had heard the story and had gone to see
the "monster" for themselves.

Newspapers sent special reporters to cover the
story. Many investigators also came and took soil
samples. One well known scientist, Ivan Sanderson,
and his assistant, Eddie Schoenenberger, came from
New York City. Mr. Sanderson was known for his
studies of odd and unusual happenings. With Mr.
Schoenenberger, he made a detailed study of the
land and soil. Pictures were taken, some of them
from airplanes. Mrs. May and the boys were all
questioned many times about what they had seen,
and the stories were always the same.

With all the attention given to this sighting, one
would think that a report would have been
definite. However, it was never revealed what was
found from the scientific tests and the
investigation.

Today, highway markers at the town limits read
"Flatwoods, Home of the Flatwoods Monster". A few
local people remain who remember the night a
"monster" landed. Their stories vary. Unidentified
Flying Objects (UFOs) have been reported many
times in the United States, but belief in them is
shaky. More people are skeptics than believers.

Much has been written about the "monster"
including a ballad which was composed by a radio
announcer, Don Lamb. The song was sung by Cindy
Coy on local radio stations. Titled "The Phantom
of Flatwoods", it still makes a hit with school
children who wonder what was on the hill over
Flatwoods that night of September 12, 1952.

A ceramic version of the Braxton County Monster was
created after it was spotted Sept. 12, 1952, on a
hilltop at Flatwoods. Kathleen May, her sons and
several other boys climbed the hill that evening,
looking for a meteor that may have crashed. As they
climbed, the atmosphere grew foggy and a metallic
smell burned their nostrils and eyes. When they
crested the hill, they saw a huge ball of fire and
pulsing light. They followed a path toward the
glowing object when there appeared, hovering just
above the ground, a huge creature with a bright red
face, green clothing and a head resembling the ace of
spades. The group turned and fled. The mysterious
sighting attracted national press. Was the object a
flying saucer? Was it rising vapor from a
disintegrated meteorite? Or was it a hoax? It's still
